Yen Tech

Yen Tech

Yen Tech is the alias of Korean American and Shanghai based artist Nick Newlin. His work to date is a mutating assemblage: ranging from elaborate performance installations to dystopian rap albums and self-aware pop music videos. His “quasi- satirical take on hi-tech pop machismo” is a kind of self mythologizing or world- building; where Newlin’s dense production style, hyperbolic lyricism, and post- human imagery coalesce as ominous narrations on digital culture and technological- paranoia.

This meta-fiction like approach to music making enables a continuously shifting output; one where Yen Tech always remains the central character. “It resembles something like immersive next-gen gaming - an inescapable, hi-res fantasy that I’ve trapped myself in.” Newlin's says of his debut 2016 album Mobis. “On the surface it functions purely as entertainment - but at its core I want to hint at something more brutal and allegoric.”

Yen Tech has performed for events at Unsound Festival, The Berlin Biennale, Art Basel Hong Kong & Miami, Ø at Corsica Studios, and 3hd Festival among many others. In 2020 Yen Tech will debut his sophomore release - a large scale music and multimedia project tbt.
